ISO 19165-1:2018

Geographic information - Preservation of digital data and metadata - Part 1: Fundamentals

This website introduces the ISO 19165-1:2018 standard that covers the requirements for the long-term preservation of digital geospatial data. This website focuses on two main aspects of the ISO 19165-1: a metadata model to document preservation aspects and an information package. This standard is part of the TC211 that covers the geospatial domain.

The ISO 19165-1:2018 defines a preservation metadata extension of ISO 19115-1. This includes metadata, representation information, provenance, context and any other information element that captures the knowledge necessary to fully understand and reuse the archived data.

The ISO 19165-1:2018 also describes a package format that is useful for the purpose of archiving geospatial data. The proposed format is a solution for the OAIS geospatial submission information package (SIP) and the dissemination information package (DIP). A geospatial IP should allow a future reconstruction of the dataset without external documentation. This package should be ready to be shared with other organizations, including those outside the geospatial community.

In addition to ISO 19165-1:2018, the ISO 19165-2:2020 "Geographic information - Preservation of digital data and metadata - Part 2: Content specifications for Earth observation data and derived digital products" exists. See here the latest published version.
